For over 25 years, Shri Balaji Bhavan has been quietly serving the most authentic, no-compromises South Indian vegetarian cuisine in the city — right in the heart of the Mahatma Gandhi District. What started as a family dream in the 1980s (alongside our original Indian clothing stores) has grown into a Houston institution.  Since the beginning, we have  kept one promise: never water down the spice, never cut corners on freshness.

Every morning we make our dosa batter from scratch — no preservatives, no shortcuts — the same way it’s been done in Udupi temples for generations. That’s why our dosas are famously bigger than your head, crispy on the outside, soft inside, and packed with bold, fiery South Indian flavor that even lifelong Texans can’t stop talking about.

From giant masala dosas and perfectly spiced chaats to fragrant thalis and comforting tomato rice, everything is made fresh to order. No frozen ingredients.  Just real South Indian vegetarian food the way it’s meant to be.
